Karot power project starts commercial operation

Will provide 3.2b kWh of cheap, clean electricity every year

ISLAMABAD:

Karot Hydropower Project, the first hydel investment project under the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which has been developed and provided investment by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), was put into full commercial operation on June 29, 2022.

The Karot project’s commercial operation ceremony was held at the Power House to officially inaugurate the project.

At the ceremony, Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) acting Managing Director Dr Munawar Iqbal extended thanks on behalf of Pakistan government to CTG.

“In spite of Covid-19 impact, the progress on construction of the project remained satisfactory, and because of such a brilliant construction, the project has started successfully delivering much-needed clean and green energy to the national grid,” Iqbal said.

He added that “on behalf of the government of Pakistan, I would like to reaffirm our commitment to implementing and meeting the CPEC energy cooperation targets and facilitating the realisation of the Belt and Road Initiative.”

China Three Gorges International Corporation (CTGI) Chairman Wu Shengliang said that the Karot project would provide 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of cheap and clean electricity to the national grid every year to meet the energy demand of around five million local consumers.
