The Sindh government has allocated Rs1.46 billion development budget for the prisons department.
As per the budget documents, the provincial government has set aside more than Rs25 million for the construction of new watch tower and repair of barracks at the Karachi Central Jail.
Amount of Rs100 million has been allocated for the construction of judicial complex at the Karachi Central Jail while Rs22 million has been allocated for the construction of residences for officers, personnel and court staff.
Moreover, a sum of Rs58 million has been allocated for increasing the housing capacity of District Jail Malir Karachi to accommodate 1,000 inmates.
Under the expansion plan while Rs10 million has been allocated for construction of High Security Jail in Thatta and Rs20 million for construction of new jail in Shaheed Benazirabad.
Similarly, more than Rs26 million has been earmarked for the repair of 10 watch towers and barracks at Karachi Central Jail so as to tighten security measures.
An amount of Rs98 million will be spent for the construction of courts in the premises of Karachi Central Jail while Rs2 million has been earmarked for installation and maintenance of cellular signals jammers.
The budget proposes to spend Rs220 million for the construction of residences for jail officers, staff and court staff at Central Jail Karachi.
Similarly, Rs2.5 million has been allocated for the security of jails in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana.
