Suspects confess to selling cell phones after tampering with IMEI, software

Bilal Colony police arrested four suspects, including a software engineer and the gang’s ringleader involved in more than 100 street crimes and recovered weapons, 15 snatched mobile phones, an IMEI number change system, software, USBs and a motorcycle from the suspects.

Bilal Colony police, in a major operation against street criminals on specialised grounds, arrested four suspects, Nadeem Bengali, Ghafoor Bengali, Asif Bengali and Shani, belonging to a four-member Babul Bengali bandit gang and seized weapons, 15 snatched mobile phones, IMEI number change system, software, USBs and a motorcycle.

During the preliminary investigation, the arrested suspects confessed to having carried out more than 100 incidents of street crimes in Karachi’s central and west districts.

Nadeem Bengali, the group’s ringleader, has been involved in several street crimes, including robberies in more than 20 homes, and was wanted by the police. Bengali said he would pay Rs1,000 for unlocking a blocked mobile phone and Rs5,000 for changing its IMEI number.

The arrested accused, Shani, is a software engineer and an expert in unlocking the blocked mobile phones and changing their IMEI numbers.

He confessed that he used to buy exemplary mobile phones from robbers for Rs15,000 to 20,000 and would change the IMEI numbers by taking good mobile phones from Nadeem Bengali and Ghafoor Bengali.

He said he would buy mobile phones from the robbers at lower prices and sell them at higher prices by changing their IMEI numbers.

An iPhone 12 Pro Max snatched from the Bilal Colony area was also recovered from the suspects.

The mobile phone record retrieved from the detained suspects is being checked.

Police registered cases against the suspects and launched an investigation.

Kashi gang

In a joint operation, the New Karachi Operation and Investigation Police arrested four members of the Kashi gang and recovered weapons, stolen mobile phones and a motorcycle from their possession.

According to police, the arrested suspects have already been arrested and jailed by the police of Sir Syed, Shahra-e-Noor Jahan, Bilal Colony, Taimoria and Gulistan-e-Jauhar police stations.
