HELSINKI:

Security concerns raised by Turkey in its opposition to Finland's and Sweden's NATO membership applications are legitimate, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Sunday during a visit to Finland.

"These are legitimate concerns. This is about terrorism, it's about weapons exports," Stoltenberg told a joint news conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto while visiting him at his summer residence in Naantali, Finland.

Sweden and Finland applied to join the Western defence alliance last month, in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But they have faced opposition from Turkey, which has accused them of supporting and harbouring Kurdish militants and other groups it deems terrorists.

Stoltenberg said Turkey was a key ally for the alliance due to its strategic location on the Black Sea between Europe and the Middle East, and cited the support it has provided to Ukraine since Russia sent troops into its neighbour on Feb 24. Moscow calls its actions a "special military operation".

"We have to remember and understand that no NATO ally has suffered more terrorist attacks than Turkiye," Stoltenberg said, using the Turkish pronunciation of the country's name, as preferred by Turkey and its President Tayyip Erdogan.

Stoltenberg and Niinisto said talks with Turkey would continue but gave no indication of progress in the negotiations.

"The summit in Madrid was never a deadline," Stoltenberg said, referring to a NATO meeting in Madrid at the end of June.

test | 2 years ago | Reply An advice for our brotherly country Turkey Never trust these western snakes. They will eventually bite you when their interests are fulfilled and they no longer need you. Only then you will understand but that would be too late to counter their bite. And you will pay dearly like Pakistan did. How to treat with west Always told them to fulfill your interests first and first of all . And after your interests are secured or fulfilled then ask them what are your interests and tell them that we will consider your concerns. And then go on to protect them if you want to. But if your interests collide with western interests. Then say sorry we cannot afford that. But never ever protect their interests first if your interests are not secured first. Pakistan learnt it by paying very dearly. We take huge losses while protecting their interests. And we end up being shitted and destructed both economically and diplomatically. So i repeat never ever trust these western snakes but only you can if your interests are served first. Even if westerns give up their lives or kill themselves in order to convince you i will never ever be convinced by them and their contribution will not be accepted because a snake is a snake. If a snake dies it means an adversary died. And for Pakistan these westerns are snakes. As a Pakistani this is the way to deal with west. Never recognize their contributions also cooperate but only if your interests are served first and first of all. Pakistan Turkey Zindabad and remember a snake is a snake no matter what.
