Free legal aid: Lawyers back to work after NGOs leave

KARACHI:

After non-profit bodies offering inmates free legal assistance agreed to leave their offices in the prisons, Karachi’s lawyers went back to work after five Saturdays of protests against them.

The NGOs were offering inmates representation free of charge as a result of which lawyers were losing out on cases. The lawyers claimed that the NGOs were working illegally. The decision to call off the strike was taken on Friday after a meeting between Justice (retired) Nasir Aslam Zahid of the NGO and the managing committees of the Karachi, Malir and Sindh High Court bar associations.

The matter had not been resolved even after the SHC intervened. It was settled amicably eventually, however, as all the NGO offices inside the prisons agreed to be removed, said Dr Farogh Nasim, an instrumental figure in ending the squabble. He added that free legal assistance for the needy would not be affected and would never be opposed by the KBA.

Dear Sir, I am a cancer patient and unfortunately lost all my wealth though i was a very comfortably living person in the near past. Currently I am a victim of D H A karachi who are holding and possessing my apartment illegally and forcibly though I had got a verdict in my favour from the Sindh High Court who on 24-5-2011 ordered D H A to handover the apartment to me but the respondent D H A did not comply. The Honble Court took about an year to give its verdict despite my several requests for a priority hearing and conclusion, though the hearing lasted only half an hour as the matter was very clear and simple.n During this period the liabilities in shape of markups of Bank accumulated more than what the relief was provided by the honble court tough time and again the fact was brought to the notice of the court.

Now I have submitted an application of contempt of court against the respondent D H A karachi but since I have no resources to hire any renowned advocate who can press an early and positive action and remedy, i am contacting ur organization to help me if u can, as this is the only and last hope for my life whithout which I will not be able to continue with my treatments . I have come to the conclusion that even the courts do not take any serious note about the people having life threatning problems and only emergent action is taken if the matter is highlighted in media or a celibiraty is involved. I am refering the case of Shahid Afridi who`s case was heard in 3 days and stay was granted which led to a big benifiet to him. Thx n regards Asrar A Shaikh B/8 Darakhshan Villas DHA Phase VI Karachi Cell 0308 2122916
