PM Shehbaz to share economic plan at Mansehra rally

The premier will share the agenda during his address at a public gathering in Mansehra

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is all set to share the agenda of the coalition government for improving the economic condition of the country during a political gathering in Mansehra today.

The premier was slated to speak at the gathering at 3 pm but he has not started addressing the rally yet. However, both PM Shehbaz and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz have reached the venue and the rally has kicked off.

Earlier, Maryam's husband Muhammad Safdar had arrived at the venue with a lion - the party's electoral symbol, but the police deployed on duty at the venue told him to take it back.

Despite his insistence, the police did not budge and Safdar had to take the wild animal back.

Faltering economy

In a bid to save the faltering economy, the premier on May 17 alongside allies decided to implement “tough decisions” to steer the country out of its current economic woes and ensure long-term sustainability, enabling the coalition to see through the remaining tenure of the government.

The meeting was chaired by PM Shehbaz and attended by heads of the coalition partners. The sources said that they finally agreed that bold decisions, even if they were unpopular, should be taken forthwith to steer the country out of the current political and economic crisis.

Subsequently, the premier on Saturday said that he was starting a process of consultation with all political stakeholders to build a consensus on the charter of economy.

In a tweet on Twitter, he said: "In 2018, as leader of the opposition, I proposed the idea of Charter of Economy which was ignored with disdain by the then government.”

“It is need of the hour now. We are starting a process of consultation with all political stakeholders to build consensus on the Charter," he added.

In an address to the nation a day earlier, the prime minister said the charter was imperative so that no government could use the economy for the sake of politics, adding that he will reach out to all political parties for dialogue on the matter.
