It's all about whites! Three times local divas stunned on the red carpet
Red carpet looks are a hot topic throughout the year and during Cannes, they’re all the rage. But while we nitpick and knit pick, fashion continues to evolve and our fashionistas, have little choice but to keep up. So, as we dissect the charismatic looks brought to us by the likes of Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai, let’s also redirect our readers’ attention to the way our home-grown celebrities have stunned us in the past so we can make notes for the future. And while we’re at it, let’s start from the base – the colour of the canvas, the pale white.
A colour too ‘minimal’ for the burgeoning extravagant red carpets, designers have not shied away from playing on its essence of elegance. Thus, here are some of our favourite white looks carried impeccably by celebrities in the past.
Mahira Khan
Channelling her inner Superstar, Mahira Khan stunned at the 8th edition of the Beirut International Awards Festival 2017 in a Nicolas Jebran ivory gown amplifying her femininity. The strapless, low back gown was embellished with intricate floral applique on a lace train and cinched at the waist. Maintaining the floral theme, she paired her couture gown with floral diamond earrings by Zoughaib and Co Styled by Michelet Collete, the actor had her hair swept to one side with minimal makeup accentuating her natural features. The simplicity of her jewellery, makeup and hair brought out the extravagance of her outfit making, this a look for the ages.
Sarwat Gillani
Our very own Churails actor Sarwat Gillani made her debut at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for the screening of her film, Joyland, donning Sania Maskatiya. Gillani, who claimed her Cannes red carpet debut was a “dream come true,” looked like an absolute dream in a white neckline dress with the added element of a bow tie. The ankle length dress cinched at the waist extending into a beautiful drape, creating a flattering effect in contrast to the poofy sleeves. The elegance of the ensemble was magnified by the simple stud earrings and a sapphire ring paired with black Tom Ford heels. The look was pulled together with her hair in a graceful half up do with minimal makeup.

Maya Ali has served looks time and again but this one from the 2019 Lux Style Awards is etched in all our minds. The Parey Hut Love actor dazed in the white Nomi Ansari haute couture gown. The strapless dress fit like a glove around her upper body, elongating into a pleated tiered tulle gown. Showing off her flawless décolleté and her minimalist stud earrings, the actor had her hair styled into a sleek bun. The look came together with a Kundan like, heavy necklace adding an eastern element to her attire along with a simple, illuminating makeup look. Ali’s dress embodied the perfect fairytale gown in this simple yet alluring look.
