Joyland, a feature film following the story of a young man and a trans dancer trying to navigate love and life, made the entire nation and its film industry proud on Monday when it received a standing ovation at its worldwide screening at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Given that this was a defining moment for Pakistani cinema, the cast and crew chose to show up in traditional eastern clothes while representing the country on an international stage.
Team Joyland walked the prestigious red carpet all glammed up in brightly-coloured sequined and embroidered shararas, sarees and shalwar-kameez combos. While actors Sarwat Gilani, Sania Saeed, and Sana Jafri all looked gorgeous dressed in their desi outfits, it was Alina Khan who understood the assignment perfectly and brought the oomph factor through her outfits and accessories. Whether it was her skirt and blouse combo, a merry red saree with gold detailing, or a breathtaking turquoise silk gown, the actor’s ensembles were personal, trendy and traditional.
We’re taking notes and so should you! Scroll ahead to find out the details of Alina's wardrobe at Cannes.
Butterfly detailing
The actor, who also starred in Saim Sadiq’s award-winning film Darling, opted for a pink crop top with butterfly detailing for the photo call for their film. Alina stunned in a bright pink blouse complimented with a see-through crop top with balloon sleeves and gold butterfly detailing on the front. The two shades of pink at the top were paired with a yellow skirt speckled with bits of orange. Her hair was tied into a high ponytail for a daytime-appropriate look and she chose dangling beaded earrings to add a local touch to the outfit.
Red for the red carpet
Alina walked the red carpet in a merry red saree with pink and gold embellishments on its sides. The saree was paired with a pink blouse with hints of gold in it. She kept her hair open, flaunting her curls, and paired the look with a beautiful choker. While many critiqued that the outfits looked like wedding attire and inappropriate for a film festival, we believe Alina’s saree, although traditional, was definitely a statement outfit at the international event.
Turquoise silk gown
For the worldwide screening of Joyland– the moment the team travelled all the way to France to experience – Alina chose to steal the spotlight in ace designer Kamiar Rokni’s creation. The Darling actor looked elegant in a turquoise silk gown with gold embroidery on its blouse. Completing her look, she kept her long hair, parted from the middle, open in loose curls.
