Of gaudy jewellery and repetitive outfits: Indian divas fail to impress at Cannes

Seriously, though - what is going on with that hairdo and headpiece?

The Cannes Film Festival rolled out the red carpet Tuesday as the Mediterranean port city filled up with cinema stars, festival-goers and oglers for the 75th-anniversary event, bringing buzz and glamour back to the resort destination. The world’s biggest film festival runs from May 17 till May 28, back to its traditional calendar following two years of pandemic disruptions, marking the return of parties and high hopes from the industry that it will spark the return of audiences to movie theatres.

Several Indian stars graced the event on Tuesday, the first day of the festival. Deepika Padukone, who is also a Jury member this year, walked the red carpet, followed by her fellow Indian stars Tamannah Bhatia, Urvashi Rautela, R Madhavan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Kamal Hassan and A R Rahman, among others.

Here, we decode the looks donned by Indian divas on day one of the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

1. Deepika Padukone - A bit too bold?

The Padmaavat star first stepped out in pastel green flared pants and a printed button-up. She opted for chunky platforms and unlike her western attire, Deepika completed her look with a heavy traditional neck piece. The fusion worked flawlessly and we were eager to see what the Gehraiyaan star had in store for the evening wear. However, much to our disappointment, Deepika made an appearance in a sequined Sabyasachi saree. The actor's bold look comprised of heavy black eyeliner, an updo with a headpiece and gaudy earrings.

But hear us out! It isn't that the outfit didn't have any potential; if anyone knows how to gracefully drape a saree, our best bet would be Deepika – but the styling of her second look was no less than a disaster. For a dark coloured saree, Deepika could have opted for a softer eyeliner and a nuder lip. Instead of the train wreck of a hairdo, the Ram Leela star could have gone for a good ol' blowdry! Lastly, can we please move on from hairpieces? It's not 2018.

2. Tamannah Bhatia - A safe choice

This was the first time Tamannah walked the coveted red carpet at the French Riveria. And boy, oh boy, we would have loved had it been a bit more memorable. The Baahubali star strutted down the red carpet clad in a white and black Gauri and Nainika gown. While her outfit fitter her beautifully, Tamannah's elaborate gown just didn't work.

For hair and makeup, the KGF star kept it rather simple - retro curls and a graphic liner with nude lips completed her look. For jewellery, Tamannah wore dangly diamond earrings. The outfit seemed like a safe choice rather than an experimental one. It isn't the worst look we saw on the first day but it surely didn't deliver the wow factor.

3. Urvashi Rautela - A little too repetitive

We'll get straight to the point. Urvashi's debut on Cannes red carpet simply failed to impress. Why, you may ask? For starters, her white off-shoulder ruffle gown with a long trail instantly reminded us of Deepika's 2019 ensemble from the same fest. Deepika stunned in a voluminous tulle gown by designer Giambattista Valli and paired it with blush bows and a turban in the same colour.

Urvashi's pristine white Tony Ward gown bore a striking resemblance to Valli's famous ruffled gown. Her hair in a sleek knot followed by a predictable red lip was a look we have seen one too many times.
