ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday has ordered the tightening of security for Chinese nationals working on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects while chairing a meeting with Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Ahsan Iqbal and other top officials.

PM Shehbaz said that there will be no compromise on the security of Chinese residents and directed the interior ministry and security agencies to ensure foolproof security.

The news comes as the country has recently seen a rise in attacks on Chinese nationals residing in Pakistan.

On Monday, Pakistani police arrested a would-be suicide bomber who planned to blow herself up near a convoy of Chinese nationals along the CPEC, a police statement said.

Monday's arrest came two weeks after a woman suicide bomber blew herself up on the Karachi University campus, killing three Chinese teachers and their Pakistani driver.

Police arrested the militant in southwestern Balochistan province that borders Afghanistan and Iran, the statement said.

It is also pertinent to note here that PM Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Premier Li yesterday and assured him that his government was determined to take all necessary measures for the enhanced security and safety of all Chinese nationals working in Pakistan.

He said that the government would conduct a thorough investigation into the Karachi suicide bombing and apprehend the perpetrators.
