In order to ensure a supply of quality food to tourists over the long weekend, Punjab Food Authority Director General (DG) Shoaib Jadoon along with food safety teams raided several food points on Saturday.
The teams shut down production units of two food outlets that were producing substandard food, and imposed a fine worth Rs4 million on them.
Jadoon checked and listened to complaints at the food points on Mall Road, Murree Expressway, Kaldana and Jhika Gali yesterday.
A fast-food restaurant on Murree Expressway was closed due to the use of expired items and a leading bakery was also shut down due to incomplete labelling and the use of highly defective ingredients. The official said that heavy fines have been imposed on 4 food points for violating the rules.
A well-known coffee point on the expressway has been fined Rs150,000 and a tea point was fined Rs50,000. Well-known restaurants and coffee shops on Mall Road were also fined. Warning notices have been issued to three food points for minor defects.
Jadoon said if the quality is not improved then strict action will be taken against these units. He said that as per the directive of Chief Minister Punjab, the department was paying special attention to the provision of quality items at tourist destinations. Tourists can contact Punjab Food Authority in case of a complaint.
