Govt probing treason case against Alvi, Imran

Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar has confirmed that the federal government is considering filing treason cases against President Dr Arif Alvi and former prime minister Imran Khan.

Talking to the media in Parliament House, he said that “we are not making cases, but we are investigating”. He added that the decision on moving Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan will be taken by the federal cabinet.

The law minister revealed that the consideration follows the suggestions of some ‘friends’ who highlighted the treatment with the country’s Constitution.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs has held preliminary consultations on the matter, but a legal opinion is yet to come.

To a question, he said that no case has been registered as yet, rather only consultations are taking place.

The minister’s confirmation validates the information given to this paper by sources that treason cases against the head of state and the former chief executive were on the cards.

Sources had told The Express Tribune that besides president and former premier, former deputy speaker Qasim Khan could also be implicated in the treason case for the unconstitutional move of dismissing the vote of no-confidence last month.

Moreover, they had added, the government might also charge Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema with the same for allegedly violating the constitution by not administering the oath of office to chief minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz.
