The body of an eight-year-old girl was found in a field in the village of Basirpur.
Police said the minor girl went to a shop in Miruwala, near Basirpur area, but did not return.
The parents became worried and started searching. The girl's body was discovered in a nearby field and it is speculated and feared that she was raped and killed.
A heavy contingent of police reached the spot upon the report of the incident. The body was taken into custody and shifted to THQ Hospital.
DPO Faisal Gulzar took notice of the incident was present at the scene himself and assured the family that they would be given justice. Gulzar also formed a special police squad to arrest the accused.
All possible causes of death are being examined but the final cause will be known only after the postmortem report. An FIR was registered against the unidentified suspects.
Child killings are unfortunately not a new occurrence in Punjab. In March 2022, a man allegedly shot his 7-day-old daughter dead, citing her gender as the motive behind the heinous act. According to reports, the alleged perpetrator shot the victim 4 times and was, according to family members, ‘humiliated’ that his wife gave birth to a girl. In a separate incident in the same month, a woman and her three children were beaten to death by an alleged home invader, reportedly a relative, in their house in Gujarat. According to details, the suspect was a relative engaged in a property dispute with the children’s father. The suspect, Safdar Hussain, was arrested by police.
