In one of his usual ill-timed platitudes last month, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said 70% of target killings in Karachi were courtesy wives and girlfriends looking to get rid of their partners and vice versa.
But for the wives, girlfriends and fiancées of the victims of target killings, the blame - all 100% - lies with the government and criminals linked to political parties locked in a hellish cycle of revenge.
Maria is one such wife. Her husband Irfan Gulzar told her he was stepping out close by and would be back shortly.
His mangled remains came back to her in a body bag on Thursday evening. A relative who went to the morgue said he counted 25 bodies in a similar state.
“He was a good husband,” she says in a faint voice, labouring over each word. Her mother-in-law makes her sip a glass of cold water. The two women - a grieving widow and mother - have no idea where their life goes from here. Remarrying is for now a distant, unthinkable concept for Maria. This Eid would have been the couple’s two-year anniversary.
Another victim, Azhar, 26, had never ventured into Lyari’s Jatpat Market before. He made a living each day by embroidering Baloch designs on fabric. As business had been slowed down in four days of violence, he decided to try the market to look for work.
His fiancée cries. His mother sits, wailing, clutching her daughters. Her son, Khizr, holds her head in his hands, imploring her to stop.
A few paces away, her son’s body - beheaded, pockmarked with bullets and scarred by torture - lies in a wooden coffin, waiting to be taken to the graveyard.
The house and courtyard are crowded with women, some sobbing, others speaking in hushed tones. “His body was cut into pieces,” whispers one. Another says she had heard of girls being kidnapped from Liaquatabad, “injected with drugs” and then “photographed”.
“The boys were riled up on Thursday,” says Mohammad Usman, who used to be councillor in the area. “They wanted to retaliate but we stopped them. Killing each other is not the solution.”
Women flood into the houses in Liaquatabad to mourn, their young children in tow, who appear entirely at sea. Nine-year-old Huzaifa confidently remarks that he knows the ethnicity of the man who killed Azhar. When the gunmen came, he ran inside his house.
At Irfan’s house, Kanwal, 11, sits among the mourners. “I hear bullets at night,” she says. “It scares me, I cannot go to sleep.”
She lives near Haji Camp, explains a woman sitting nearby. “Her other siblings are so scared because hand grenades were lobbed into their neighbourhood. They have been moved to their grandmother’s house in Malir. Only Kanwal has stayed back with her mother.”
Mothers are concerned about their young children’s mental state. “My son doesn’t want to go to the mosque because he’s scared of dying. What happens if we cannot even go to God’s house?”
As mourners amassed at Azhar’s house on Thursday evening, a couple of men passed by and shot at the marquee pitched outside the building. “Our boys also got their arms out and took up positions,” says Azhar’s cousin, Suraiya. “They have to defend and protect us if these things happen. Will everyone now need to be armed?”
“What else do you expect when men have no jobs?” says a former Peoples Amn Committee member on Wednesday. “Of course they will take up arms.”
Across town, Khizr agrees. “There is a lot of anger.”
The rage among Karachi’s young men has manifested itself as target killings, which have constantly ticked on for over a year now. The guns are whipped out seconds after the news spreads of the death of a political party member or an ill-timed speech. And the outcome of the ‘revenge’ fills the morgues.
Near Liaquatabad Daakhana, a few tyres are set on fire. It is a warning sign: the real fire and anger lies ahead, glowering in the young men’s minds.

@Syed - Pakistan is not ready for democracy with such huge illietracy. Look what the so called democracy got every one into - "The Revenge of the Gansters" KIlling, kidnappings, mutilations, Bloodshed and economic melt down. Pakistan has been thrown behind two decades with this so called democracy. First educate the people. such that they konw the meaning of democracy. When Army taktes over, Inshallah, they should open educational institutions and let people be educated for the next decade or so. The civillian government is too useless and has caused great damage to Pakistan. The enemies of Pakistan are rejoicing to see Pakistan sink. Very Sad.
It is quite obvious that this is a gangster government and they are supported by gangsters and drug peddlers and brain damaged killers who are high on drugs and killing and tortoring humanity. There is no such thing left as democracy any more . . there is total Anarchy blossoming by the minute and who knows along with them many opportunist foreign infiltrators funding and supporting the destruction of the Pakistani Nation. This givernment is 100% responsible for sinking the country so rapidly down the gutter. The Army should not delay any more, otherwise the consequences could be deadly and irreversible for decades to come. Dear Army, please just step in and take over for the sake of your country . . .you do not need any permission from the corrupt leaders as they are playing delaying tactics to greedly hold on to their dictatorial power. For the Army to keep on waiting for any permission from the useless lot is unfair and unjust to the people of Karachi and Pakistan!!!!!!!!
@pardesi: Since our girls start wearing Jeans.
@perah: no its not possible for us, because we are COWARD :), if we were so brave we would have done this long ago
Democracy is the best revenge
Funniest headline ever on ET in the midst of tragedy
People of Karachi and Pakistan should rise up against government and politicians so that atleast there killing will be justify and not the innocent people. We can't have democracy when "bibi" passed the " seat to her husband or son, that's not democracy that's dictatorship.
@Syed Sami: Yes our media and so called civil society responsible for this but they not ashamed for whatever they did to our country.
@Ruman: if more people could speak and think like you this place would be wonderful.
@Aliya: dear sister I understand the saddness you are going through may Allah be with you I started tearing when I read.... Karachi is hopeless young blood needs to start a reform.... start somethin to save other fathers... and the other childrens sadness you wouldnt like them having the same feeling you are going through!!!
@Xoya: you think they would????
Pakistan needs to wake up!!! No political party will ever accept their mistake!!! They will just go on and on with stupid ideas of theirs. Pakistan needs to Forget their differences in Caste and Race. And a People have to Start a New Reform I pray that Some Reformist Comes Along! and An Uprising happens Althaf should be braught to pakistan and killed by the people this will only happen if the public stands up till you people fight with each other nothing is going to happen trust me do your thing start with 2 people atleast and within mininutes you will have 200000 start a facebook group a BBM campaign a twitter group invite all young blood no matter what caste or creed start trusting the other and have one cause for a better New Pakistan!!! start the reform instead of just blaming one another!!! do it !!! just do it!!! and running to other countries!!!
Its time for GO zardari GO movement by the people of Karachi, and people must join hands for a massive demonstration on shahr-e-faisal. Some few million dedicated citizens are enough to jolt the government of murderers.
The art of Journalism is not just in writing and getting in published, it is also about taking the responsibility in reflecting the value of the society. We need to mind the language and be carefully when picking the words when it comes to writing an article and getting it published. My concern here is that word "Girlfriend" is not appropriate choice along with wives and fiancées in a Muslim society. Believe me this issue can grow and can fire-back to you very well. Next time, despite of the fact the information might be true, do adhere to best practices when it comes to Journalism. Keep in mind that this newspaper is mainly for the Peoples of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is not tolerable in our society the concept of Girlfriend or Boyfriend.
Please do not take my remarks are considered as positive criticism as they are not intended to diss anyone.
@Pardesi... right after you left...
is adding a comment only going to work? no, if you own gutts, get people united and stand up together. is that possible for any of you?
We all know who the fascists are!! It all started when on wednesday 5 young boys from lyari...came down to zainab market for eid shopping... they never returned home... were found in pieces, stuffed in bags in different areas of the city...
Killing breeds killing... War breeds War... Where is this ethnic strife going to end is saddening! The ppl of karachi need to rise up to stop further bloodshed.
wake up karachi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was more likely to happen in our cities as we were unable to protect the rights of poor, disadvantages, minorities and on the top those who were helpless. This is ultimate signs of the curse and reward for being indifferent on human rights issues in the country. I wish people could know their role and come out of political, religious and sectarian shells. We also have now idea how we should react to such incidences, rather we blame someone who himself is victim of circumstances. No government or militaty can fight this, unless supported by public and their leaders. Unfortunatly, in Pakistan, the people workship their leaders who have little interest in well being of people rather they are just protecting their territories.
where is the prime minister in this whole scenario
Lets stand up to fight for the rights of our dear Muslim brothers and sisters. Lets gather into crowds to stop this cowardly act of target killing. Lets do it before its too late. The only thing these culprits want is to destabilize Pakistan. All the international forces are involved in it.
We are in state of denial, we will never accept that its our mistake for the worst condition in which we are.. Don't do anything.. keep praying.. everything will be fine
We are in state of denial
People, All you do is talk, and comment on such incidents like kitty party aunties and then forget all about it, if you are the least bit concerned please stand up for what you believe in and "do" some thing, if not then shut it,
Express tribune, rather then focusing on the negative lets display a bit of positive about Pakistan as well .. i agree bad news sells better but are we here only to make money or do we also have a social responsibility towards our country ?. We are labeled as nothing more then a disastrous nation with terrorist and criminals, and treated as such all around the world which is shameful, i am sure there is something good about the country which can be promoted to display a positive peace loving nation.
Girl friends? Since when did Pakistan become USA?
shot at sight every Minster, every MNA, every Politician from every political partry Oh My Dear Country men that's the only way out now. God Bless us!
Its time to take up arms and defend yourself. (period)
@bunny: Who vote any of these parties in the first place, they are all bogus votes.
And I envy and pety on the people who support all these parties, how they are going to be answered on the day of judgement when they are brought in front of Allah, showing their deeds as being a supporter of them in the name of independence or whatever crap!!!
REMEMBER '' THE BASTILLE " The monarchy that savagely rules with impudent Alliance must come to an end.
Why it happens to Karachi during the coalition of PPP and PML (N)? We are so dead that we still want them to be ruling us? I blame the media to be the culprit for bringing them to power. All these political parties along with the media is responsible for our situation. Everything was better in Musharraf's time, but we ourselves called for this feudalism and real dictatorship. We actually chose our DICTATOR!!!! because we wanted some spice in our lives. The Chief Justice issue was fueled to make some cheap TRP. I would ask what he has done since coming back?? He is a mere spectator as well
I wish our people would come out from the state of madness and stop calling for the so called " democracy" and think once before believing some thing conveyed by the media.
i can very well associate with the feelings of the family who loose their loved ones to the violence going on in Karachi. My father was shot dead while coming back from his office at the start of this year. It was just another normal friday morning where he said he will be back shortly; yes he did came back but without life. I identified his body lying lifeless in the hospital. After his death, the life is not the same; not a single day passes by when we dont think about him or miss him. I truly empathize with the grieved families and pray to Allah to give us all courage to go through this loss.
As to what Rehman Malik said on the ratio of target killings vs girl friend-wife killing, i have yet to see whether he and his associates get killed in target killing or by their wives/girl friends. i have yet to see their families mourn on their lifeless bodies and YES i have yet to see their end on the day of judegment; a day when Allah Talah will take revenge from them on our behalf and surely that would be the day I and many more people who have suffered like me would be at peace.
May Allah Bless Us All... Ameen
Very well done MQM, you wanted to save your political might and you knew the cost. Everybody should visit MQM official website and see what MQM is all about? Is it about mohajir or about every Pakistani.Because Mohajir accepts Paksitan with muhajir living as a separate entity and that too as the sole owner of Karachi........???????????//// for What reason????????????/
@bunny: I agree do not give PPP ,MQM,ANP ,& nawaz sharif Vote
this time Pakistanis shuld elect an Educated ,non criminal back ground Person & who is not a land lord
wake up pakistanisssssssssssssssss
We Pakistanis sould give Rehman Malik,Zaradari ,Gillani & Kiyani a Warning . If they cannot Restore Peace in 15 days STEP DOWN & GO AWAY
@Usman: true i agree plz send him some where far away from Pakistan .
our nation is dead....... There is no one to raise a voice against the Corrupt Government. :(
Karachi is again blood bathed reeking of death.Time for table talks between various political groups have long gone.A purging operation is required to cleanse Karachi of miscreants. Govt needs to take this situation pretty seriously while defining defining a clear role for the law enforcement agencies in Karachi.
If we wont stop supporting MQM,PPP ANP and other parties our kill innocent people like mosquitoes, this barbaric killing will never stop in Khi. Since my childhood I have been seeing these killing and now I am a grown man. When will are public learn the lesson?
General public is to be blamed for all this, not parties.
Rehman Malik will be the first person to fly out to his homeland in UK, when PPP is out of power. His attitude and competence is at par with Thanadar who try to potray all is OK despite his own party two times elected MNA is killed. We are hopeless as long as his team is in responsible for peace in Karachi their wil be no peace
its the jelous and crazy wivees, girlfreinds , fwbs all playing each other gainst the other. some are to blind to see this!! doing this the gals know we come to blame each other and if you don't see the game then u are blind
Had population and food increased in the same ratio, it is probable that man might never have emerged from the savage state. Chapter XVIII, paragraph 11, lines 16-17
this is being ridiculous , karachi is being like somalia now.. they should call army not only in karachi in govt. also. this govt is unable to control the situation. INNOCENT people are dying.
Blame for Karachi lies not with Rahman baba but with Asif, Zardari, Altaf Hussain and ANP leadership. Rahman is uttering the words of the monster. MQM started it I am not sure anyone except the Army can stop it. I hope someone better do something quickly before the whole country into 1947, neighbor against neighbor and friend against friend. It appears ANP, MQM and PPP rather let the country go to hell while their leaders are busy counting the loot.
It is nature's revenge from us! as saying goes on " As you sow so shall you reap " and its true to us!! in the past we had sowed seeds of hate among each other and now nature has brought the time to crop that field in the form of dead bodies!!!! Should we still have to pay for it????
People know Rahman Malik is not competent to control situation of Karachi but he should be ashmed of his statment at least!
Killing unarmed opponents is a cowardly act, doing so in Ramadan is Satanic.
To Allah we belong and to Him alone we all have to return. My sympathy to all those families and individuals who have lost their loved ones in this ongoing carnage of inhumane madness.
May Allah grant peace, patience and security to all victims' families. Ameen.
May the curse of Allah befall on those people who have orchestrated this onslaught on the innocent. Ameen.
May Allah bring to account the leaders and their acts of treachery with their own people. Ameen.
There is no guidance but the Guidance of the Quran and no path worth following other than that of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessings be upon him).
O my fellow brothers and sisters in Faith, this is an appeal to you all, return to the Quran and to the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) for in these is our salvation and true success. We are Muslim FIRST and foremost, than we are the proud nation of Muslims, the Pakistanis and thereafter we are Pathan, Muhajir, Baloch, Sindhi, Punjabi and so on. Do not destroy yourselves nor your deeds by falling prey to the political ambitions of the hypocrites of this nation.
My intent is not to deliver a sermon nor point the shortcomings of others rather it is an advise, to myself first, and to all who read it. Return to the Quran, return to the Sunnah.
Allah has made every life sacred and none has the right to take it but Him. So don't fall prey to the tricks of shaytaan and his companions amongst jinn and men.
May Allah guide us all on Siraat Al-Mustaqeem. Ameen.
Regards,
Ruman.
There should be a Supreme Parliamentary Political Council (SPPC) comprising all political groups/parties present in the parliament of Pakistan; the SPPC should be tasked to tackle national ills, poor law and order situation, economic stagnation, hellish power cuts, industrial slowdown, misfit educational chaos; re-injecting economic oxygination, etc. Can this panacea look as recipe to the ruling chairs?
Only if Mr Malik's girlfriend/wife had taken her revenge in time, Karachi in particular and Pakistan in general would have been free of this scourge of a man! Utter excuse for a human being, he is!
nobody can save us when we cant even defend ourselves these gangsters are flourishing because our politicians depend on them for their dirty work, that's why they are not taking action, its bit difficult for army to take over city because they are already stretched too far thin, on indian border, talibans ,baluchistan and these gangs know that. sill i heard that Gen kayani give 48 hours dead line to qaim ali shah to stop this. Law, justice, court, civilization, peaceful protests are such a hollow words, old school eye for an eye justice rule is still valid,, a gangster kill your son you kill his son, bullet ka jawab bullet sey dia ja sakta hai, but we are taught not to take law into our own hands wah what a civilization, in this civilized society so called education is a clever way to make us defenseless and rely on thing called law and justice, rulers, army, police institutions that only exists to bully us. In old times only stronger do what ever he can with the weak, so called civilization doesn't change any thing strong still pushing the weak by using court, rules and law, and they get clever by giving us the illusion that they are to protect us but actually with so called civilized exterior they are still the same.
Its time for Rehman Baba to go....into oblivion.
To the Express Tribune: Pls launch a public campaign demanding his removal.
And thanks for such sensitive journalism ....in my opinion the very best in Pakistan.
Zulfiqar Mirza ,vide the carnivours of Amn Committe and Drug peddlers of Lyari has opened up a front and thus let loose on innocent Urdu speaking population of Karachi . Does someone remeber his hate filled speech " agar yeh log burst marna shooro kar den to Urdu speakings darwaze par maare jaenge ..............."
..................and that is only truth .
Best title ever........
ALL the people of Pakistan...I wish you would not vote again PPP, MQM and ANP...if you do then no point...
At this moment, things are even beyond insanity and out of control... Our interior minister talks this rubbish while innocent people, who have nothing to do with anything, and earn honest livings unlike the majority of the Government of Pakistan, lose their lives daily in Karachi through ethnic/target killings i,.e. based on the language their speak/their ethnicity. Bloody ridiculous, I tell you... Barbaric societies are more normal than what Pakistan has become. This is one thing we cannot blame on foreign agencies (Target killings in Karachi). Have you seen the state of these bodies???? They have been tortured in ways not known to mankind. This is political violence at it's ugliest. Please say a dua for the innocent departed victims of this attack. This is saddening and sickening,.,,
Our nation should start protesting against the government as they are not doing their job. The government is not taking any responsibility whatsoever for anything done to our country. We as one nation, should stand up and work together to make Pakistan a better place. We are one man army. Let's work together!
