KURIANWALA:

A woman attempted suicide by jumping into a canal with her three daughters following a domestic dispute. Police reached the spot and started the operation.

Police said a 39-year-old resident of Mohalla Sakhi Sarwarabad and her three daughters, aged 7, 4 and 3, jumped into the Canal Rakh Branch and attempted suicide. Meanwhile, Rescue 1122 personnel were informed by citizens.

The teams rushed to the spot and rescued the mother and her three daughters from the canal, before shifting them to Civil Hospital. Madina Town Police arrived on the scene after receiving information on the incident.

Suicide attempts are not uncommon in Pakistan, with both men and women trying to end their lives for a range of personal reasons. In August 2018, a lawyer attempted suicide outside the Lahore Supreme Court Registry by self-immolation.

He survived the attempt but was arrested by police for the act. According to the accused, he attempted suicide after being informed he would not be appointed as a prosecutor.

Meanwhile in March 2022, a woman attempted suicide, again by self-immolation, in a market in Chak Jhumra.

A preliminary investigation by police identified the incident as a suicide attempt, however the woman maintained that teenager threw crackers at her, causing her clothes to catch fire. However, no witnesses saw anyone set fire to her.
