Of unplanned pregnancy and falling in love with A$AP Rocky: Rihanna tells all

Singer said she and A$AP Rocky weren't 'planning' the pregnancy, but 'certainly weren't planning against it," either

Rihanna's journey to motherhood is not what she originally expected. The 34-year-old singer opened up about expecting her first child in Vogue's May cover story and admitted that her baby on the way wasn't exactly planned. The Anti artist said she and boyfriend A$AP Rocky weren't necessarily "planning" the pregnancy, but they "certainly" weren't "planning against it," either.

The Fenty billionaire sat down with the magazine to discuss her third-trimester maternity style and impending motherhood, telling Vogue that when it came to getting pregnant, she was just “having fun,” with the Harlem rapper. “I wouldn't say planning. But certainly not planning against it. I don't know when I ovulate or any of that type of shit. And then it was just there on the test. I didn't waste any time. I called him inside and showed him. Then I was in the doctor's office the next morning and our journey began,” she said.

And while she "always thought" her life "would be marriage first, then a baby," the singer and beauty mogul added, "Who says it has to be that way? I'm certainly not going to let that get in the way of me being a mom."

Moreover, she revealed during the interview that while she has been enjoying her pregnancy thoroughly, she is a bit nervous to get hit with postpartum depression. “Will I feel out of control emotionally?” the beauty CEO said. “Those are the stories I hear from other women that scare me.”

Rihanna's pregnancy has been nothing short of unconventional, especially where maternity clothes are concerned. "When I found out I was pregnant, I thought to myself, 'There's no way I'm going to go shopping in no maternity aisle,' " she explained. "I'm sorry — it's too much fun to get dressed up. I'm not going to let that part disappear because my body is changing."

The Umbrella singer said she hopes she has been "able to redefine what's considered 'decent' for pregnant women" in terms of clothing. "My body is doing incredible things right now, and I'm not going to be ashamed of that. This time should feel celebratory. Because why should you be hiding your pregnancy?" Rihanna added.

Although feeling out of sorts is a valid fear, it doesn't appear to be stopping her from living her best life. In classic Rihanna style, the star wore a stunning custom Alaïa lace jumpsuit with matching red heels for her cover shot. Like most Annie Leibovitz editorials, Rihanna's recent fashion story seems to reference her eccentric real-life pregnancy looks, from duvet-style Marc Jacobs coats and crystal-covered abdomens to cropped leather jackets and Dior motorcycle gloves. Nothing, it seems, is out of the question for Rihanna.

Along with maternity jeans, she has a list of other pregnancy do’s and don’ts, starting with the baby shower. “No brunch, no blush tones. And no animal-shaped nothing,” she says, shaking her head. “I mean it’s lit for a lot of people—I’ve even planned a couple of baby showers like that myself—it’s just not right for me. Personally, I want a party. I want everyone to be plastered and crawling out. And it’s got to be co-ed! Don’t put me on no wicker chair somewhere with gifts at my feet where everyone is staring at me.”

Rihanna joked with Vogue about the possibility about her child not being into fashion. “Yo! That is the day that I will have a problem if my child doesn't like fashion? What? You've got me so nervous!” she quipped.

During a Fenty Beauty event in February, the singer revealed that it's been "fun" but also "a challenge" to play with fashion while she's pregnant. "I like it. I'm enjoying it," she said at the time.

"I'm enjoying not having to worry about covering up my tummy," the We Found Love singer said, adding, "If I feel a little chubby, it's like, whatever! It's a baby!" The mom-to-be also opened up about how fashion and beauty are helping her feel confident of late. "Right now, being pregnant, some days you just feel like, 'Ugh, I just want to lay here on this couch all day.' But when you put on a little face and a little lipstick, you transform," she explained.

If there’s one person on the planet who can match the risks she takes with fashion, it’s Rocky. “Like iron sharpening iron,” is how Rihanna describes their style rapport. The rapper, who was friends with Rihanna for years before they were romantically linked, described her in GQ last May as “the love of my life. I think when you know, you know.”  But none of this was smooth for Rihanna. “People don’t get out of the friend zone very easily with me,” she mentioned, concluding, “And I certainly took a while to get over how much I know him and how much he knows me, because we also know how much trouble we can land each other in.”
