25 years later: ‘Farar’ returns with web-series starring Sarwat Gilani, Tooba Siddiqui, Zahid Ahmed

Mehreen Jabbar is back with yet another refreshing tale of joy and hardships centring female friendships in a trio

Twenty-five years ago, film director Mehreen Jabbar worked her magic with the telefilm Farar which told the story of three friends, all sharing opposite yet frivolous personalities, navigating life, relationships, and everything in between. Relatable and lighthearted, the telefilm, which is set in Karachi, won hearts for its brilliant storyline and dialogues and the star-studded cast added all the more memorable life to it.

Now, Jabbar has returned with another refreshing telltale of the joy and hardships of female friendships, featuring the same name as the 1990 film. Replacing the ever-cherished actors, Sania Saeed, Marina Khan, Huma Nawab and Humayun Saeed, Jabbar has now chosen Sarwat Gilani, Tooba Siddiqui, Mariam Saleem, Maha Hasan and Zahid Ahmed in lead roles.

Whether the upcoming Farar is a spin-off of the previous one is a mystery unknown as of yet. However, Jabbar hinted for it to be a remake after she took to Instagram and posted collages of parallel recreated scenes from the telefilm and the web series.

“25 years later, three friends try to get by and shine in the glorious and mad city that is Karachi. From old Farar to a new Farar, Coming this year,” read the caption of the post that immediately created a sense of nostalgia for many fans.

The new Farar, however, is exclusively made for the Indian OTT platform Zee5, which is currently banned in Pakistan, and is slated to release later this year. Gilani, one of the lead actors in the series, has filmed Churails and Qaatil Haseenaon Ke Naam with the streaming platform. Nowadays, the Saba Qamar and Naumaan Ijaz-starrer Mrs. & Mr. Shameem is also streaming on Zee5.

Gilani has done many notable projects in collaboration with Jabbar in the past on Pakistani television including but not limited to hit series such as Malal, Mata e Jan Hai Tu and even a film titled Dil Mera Dharkan Teri which was a remake of an old Pakistani feature film. Siddiqui, another lead actor in the series, has also worked with Jabbar on the big screen with the period drama Vasl and a romantic telefilm titled Wapsi.
