The Government Viqar-un-Nisa Post Graduate College was formally given the status of a university on Friday.
After graduation, this will be the third university in Rawalpindi and the sixth university in the district.
After formally inaugurating the university named ‘Government Viqar-un-Nisa Women University’, Interior Minister handed over a Rs300 million grant letter to the university administration.
The university has been allowed to recruit against the newly sanctioned 264 new positions including the recruitment of a registrar, pro-vice-chancellor and faculty. Prof Dr Zahida Parveen, who served as the principal of the college, will be the first vice-chancellor of the new university.
The interior minister handed over the university notification to the first vice chancellor amidst the loud applause of hundreds of female students attending the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Rashid said that he was very happy today. He said that he made 14 trips to Lahore to get approval for the university.
“I went to the offices of ministers and authorities and begged them to sign the no-objection certificate. I am grateful to PM Imran Khan, Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and Chief Minister Sardar Usman Bazdar for awarding the university status to Viqar-un-Nisa College.
He directed the university vice-chancellor to offer jobs to the daughters of poor families of Rawalpindi against the newly sanctioned posts.
“In all the colleges, schools and universities of Rawalpindi, new multipurpose halls, hostels, science and computer laboratories have been constructed at a cost of Rs1 billion in the last three years. My education projects and health projects have been completed,” Rashid said adding that no one can defeat a nation whose mothers and daughters were educated.
Before these educational institutions and colleges, he said, Rawalpindi was ranked 37th in education in the district but now it has achieved the number rank, he said adding that the daughter of a rickshaw driver in Dhok Hassu has topped the CSS examination.
The interior minister said that a college has been built in every poor locality of Rawalpindi and girls do not have to go to other cities for higher education and instead girls from other districts were coming to Rawalpindi for education.
The new university is expected to admit 3,000 to 5,000 female students in its first academic year. The first academic session will commence this year.
He said that burglars and conscience sellers have united to topple the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan so that they could pursue their looting agenda.
He termed the day next very crucial for Pakistani politics.
Rashid said that he favoured early and transparent elections so that the people could elect honest members and reject those who looted the motherland ruthlessly.
