As we marvel over the latest season of old school romance in Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton, actors from the series caught a glimpse of Bollywood’s romance sequences and boy, are they loving it!
Actor Charithra Chandran, who plays the season's diamond Edwina Sharma, along with Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington aka the infamous Lady Whistledown on the show, reacted to popular romantic scenes from some of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters.
As part of a game show, the Bridgerton actors were shown scenes of Bollywood’s bigwigs Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan.
“There's one thing that matches the romance and yearning in Bridgerton and that's Bollywood,” says Charithra, who is representing the South Asians living in London during the time the period drama is set. She goes on and introduces Nicola to the world of Bollywood as the duo watches clips together.
The first clip they’re blown away by is the scene from Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Deepika and Ranbir’s kiss made Nicole take a sigh as she murmured an "Awww."
They were particularly moved by Katrina’s bike scene from Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara. Charithra said, “I love that it's the woman making the romantic gesture on the bike. She looks so glam on a bike, if that was me even filming, it'd be like…yeah," gesturing to how scared they’d be while riding a bike.
Saving the best for the last, the duo go back in time with the rain scene from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai between Shah Rukh and Kajol at the summer camp. Both Nicola and Charithra confessed they couldn't have shot such a scene. As Charithra explained to Nicola who the male actor is, it appeared that Nicole was already familiar with King Khan. She reacted, “I have heard that name!” and Charithra replied, “Very, very, very famous man.”
They moved on to an “iconic scene” as per Charithra, of Sushmita Sen’s entry in Main Hoon Na that leaves Shah Rukh stunned and speechless. She told Nicola how Sushmita was the Miss Universe and also expanded on Shah Rukh’s open hands known as his signature pose. As Sushmita's saree sweeps across Shah Rukh's face, Nicola reacted, “Ohhh, I mean, come on,” with her eyes glued to the screen.
After watching the clips, Charithra exclaimed, “We all deserve a Shah Rukh Khan in our lives.” Nicola a;lso added how she’ll “never be over these [videos].”
Created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, Bridgerton revolves around Regency era London's town during the season, when debutantes were presented at court to seek out a life partner.
