Kristen Stewart rocked the Oscars red carpet in shorts and Timothee Chalamet went shirtless on Sunday as stars made a full-fledged return for Hollywood’s big night out after the seismic changes wrought by Covid-19.
After last year’s smaller-than-usual affair held at a train station due to the pandemic, Sunday’s unbridled Oscars glamour at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre brought lots of pastel colors punctuated by bright splashes of gold. As the ceremony approached, more of the night’s biggest stars strolled down the red carpet in their haute couture garbs. Here are some outfits that shone brighter than others at the Oscars red carpet.
Jessica Chastain
The winner of the best actress statuette for her portrayal of American evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker dazzled the carpet crowd in a two-toned Gucci dress, complete with a ruffled trim at the bottom.
Lupita Nyong'o
Nyong’o’s sparkling golden dress also turned heads, with the Black Panther star looking as radiant as ever in the shimmery number. Nyong'o wore her hair piled up on top of her head to keep the attention on the dress.
Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart, a nominee for best actress, wore black shorts as part of her Chanel outfit alongside fiancee Dylan Meyer. She said that playing the late Princess Diana in Spencer brought on some unexpected emotions. “It just made me feel six feet tall and, like, happy,” she told cable channel E!, “She’s cool, she’s fun and she touches you.”
Timothee Chalamet
Dune star Timothee Chalamet also opted to show some skin, wearing only a short-cropped, glitzy blazer paired with dark pants and boots - and no shirt. The actor channeled his inner rockstar, pairing the outfit with silver chains and messy hair.
Zendaya
His Dune co-star Zendaya also opted for some sparkle in a custom Valentino two-piece, consisting of a cropped whote blouse and a shimmery silver skirt. The actor accessorised with silver diamond-encrusted cuffs on her arms, keeping her hair off her shoulders in an updo.
Billie Eilish
Singer Billie Eilish, who won the award for the best original song for No Time To Die, brought some serious drama to the red carpet in a black tiered custom Gucci dress. The singer matched her hair with her dress, keeping it jet black and wearing it in a smooth, polished bob.
Megan Thee Stallion
Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who joined the cast of the winner of best animated film Encanto to perform the mega-hit We Don't Talk About Bruno, definitely made it the 'hot girl' Oscars in a shimmering strapless blue gown with a thigh-high slit and a midriff cutout.
After a scaled-down ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station last year, the Oscars returned to their traditional venue, which was filled to about three-quarters capacity with 2,500 guests, allowing for some social distancing.
