Russia’s claim that United States President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden helped finance a US research programme dedicated to 'bio-weapons' in Ukraine may be partially true, as per new emails providing insights to the development.

The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Thursday that Hunter Biden, the son of the US president, was directly involved in financing biological laboratories in Ukraine.

Igor Kirillov, the head of the Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Force, presented documents at a news conference in Moscow, allegedly of Ukrainian and US origin, seized in battles in Ukraine.

While intelligence experts termed the allegations a brazen propaganda to justify the Ukraine's invasion, emails believed to be from one of Hunter's laptop show how he helped ensure millions of dollars of funding for the programme, Mail Online reported.

It pertained to Metabiota, a contractor of the country's defence department specialising diseases that can cause a pandemic and be used as bio-weapons.

As per the record, an official of the company, proposed to be dealing with medical data, sent an email to Hunter in 2014, wherein he expressed how the lab could help 'assert Ukraine's cultural and economic independence from Russia'.

The emails and the data further show that the US president's son had a prominent role in ensuring that the lab carried out pathogen research, that too a few hundred miles away from the Russian border.

However, the research reportedly turned into a security liability for Washington once Moscow invaded Ukraine.
