Country’s largest slum gets Virtual University campus

Master's degrees offered in five different fields will be awarded at the new campus

KARACHI:

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication (MOITT) Syed Amin ul Haq inaugurated a campus of Virtual University (VU) in the largest slum of the country - Orangi Town - on Monday.

The Virtual University (VU) of Pakistan is the first public sector ICT-based varsity with more than 130,000 students. Working under the ministry of IT & Telecom, VU is the first government university to open a campus in Orangi Town.

Haq congratulated VU on establishing its campus in Orangi Town. He said that the opening of this campus will bring revolutionary changes in the life of the residents of the Orangi town.

He said that Master's degrees offered in five different fields will be awarded at the new campus of Virtual University.

If Orangi develops through education, the city will also develop, and so the province, said Haq.

IT minister urged administrator Karachi to hand over the ruined schools of Orangi MQM in order to turn the ruined schools into the state of art schools.

"Each passing day a new technology is coming and we will have to equip our children with the latest and emerging technologies", said Haq.

The minister assured a coming revolution from the Sindh Digital Project. He said that it was an impression that MQM Pakistan's IT ministers would not promote IT in Sindh, but we have launched and completed most of the projects in Sindh.

Present at the event, MQM MPA from Orangi Town, Ali Khursheedi said that Orangi Town is famous for its slum population, where basic facilities lack but we are trying to provide facilities to this area.

Speaking at the occasion, Secretary MOITT, Dr Suhail Rajput said that the aim of IT Ministry is to strengthen the youth and peoples of the country with the latest technologies.
