Fund set up for welfare of prisoners
The University of Haripur has set up ‘Prisoners Welfare Fund’ to educate and train prisoners.
The university’s Vice Chancellor Dr Anwar Gilani, on the final day of his three-year term, inaugurated the fund.
Speaking on the occasion he said, "The education and training of prisoners and their social and mental wellbeing are absolutely important. It is not just the responsibility of the government or prison staff but also the collective responsibility of society.”
Talking about the importance of the Psychological Rehabilitation Centre of Haripur University, he said that the centre could play a vital goal in achieving these goals.
The fund was introduced by Registrar Dr. Shah Masood, and Dr. Ziaur Rehman explained the background of the initiative.
Assistant Superintendent of Central Jail Haripur Saud Khan was also present at the ceremony and stated that "The centre could play a significant role in the psychological training of the inmates and the prison staff, especially in stress management and rehabilitation."
The director of the centre, Dr Rizwan, said, "The university’s centre will provide its full services to the central jail. New Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayub Khan will also be taking charge from tomorrow. He has a very close relationship with the IG Prisons Khalid Abbas, which should help move matters forward. Haripur University will contribute fully to this fund and its other resources."
