KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday approved for hearing the appeals of Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, against the acquittal of Faisal Mota, Obaid K2, Farhan Mullah and others and issued notices to the parties in the case of recovery of explosives and weapons from the now defunct Muttahida Qaumi Momvement (MQM) headquarters Nine Zero.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro heard the appeals of Rangers against the acquittal of Faisal Mota, Obaid K2, Farhan Mullah, and others in the arms and explosives recovery case.

The court allowed the appeals for hearing and issued notices to the parties. Rangers Prosecutor Rana Khalid had argued that a special anti-terrorism court had acquitted 14 suspects in the case of recovery of explosives and weapons. The ATC also handed down various sentences to 13 MQM workers.

An appeal has also been filed to increase the sentences in the illegal arms case. The court had sentenced Faisal Mota to 10 years in prison for illegal possession of firearms. The court had sentenced accused Farhan Shabbir alias Mullah, Obaid K2 and Abid to eight years imprisonment.

Milk prices

The Sindh High Court has adjourned the hearing of a petition against the arbitrary increase in milk prices in Karachi without taking any action.

A two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh, heard the petition. A progress report was presented by the Karachi commissioner.

Irfan Aziz, counsel for the petitioner, argued that if the price of milk was fixed at Rs94 by the commissioner, then it was being sold at Rs120. Now the price of milk has been fixed at Rs120, but the commodity is being sold at Rs150 per kg in the city. The Karachi commissioner may be bound to ensure the sale of milk at the fixed price, the petition requested.

Chief Justice Sheikh remarked that the prices of everything have gone up. "How many items should the court order to fix pricing for? Tomorrow, they will ask the court to fix the price of sugar and flour. It is not the job of the court to determine the prices of groceries," the SHC CJ remarked.

The CJ, while addressing Advocate Irfan Aziz, said that fodder for animals has also become expensive. "Do you know what fodder the buffalo eats and how expensive it is? How can we do what is not court's job?" the bench remarked. CJ Sheikh adjourned the hearing of the petition without taking any action.
