Matric exams in Sindh likely to begin from May 17

Education dept also proposes annual intermediate exams from June 1; steering committee meeting on Tuesday

KARACHI:

The education department of Sindh has summoned a meeting of its steering committee on Tuesday to finalise the schedule of annual matriculation and intermediate examinations for the current academic year across the province.

The authority has conveyed the agenda of the meeting to the officials concerned and chairpersons of the boards, recommending that the exams for Matriculation and Intermediate be held from May 17 and June 1, respectively.

The department has also suggested commencing the new academic session from August 1.

The meeting, which will be chaired by the provincial education minister, Sardar Shah, would also give approval to the academic calendar for the new session.

According to the proposed calendar, summer vacations will be observed in June and July whereas winter vacations from December 22 to 31 in schools across the province.

It would also decide the schedule of admissions in ninth grade and first-year intermediate and the results of matriculation and intermediate examinations.

The participants will also consider giving approval to the vacations announced by education institutions for the ongoing year. As per the agenda, there has been no change in the number of holidays of the institutions.

Meanwhile, exams for primary to eighth grades have been scheduled for the first week of May.

Due to the delay in calling the steering committee meeting, most private schools conducting matriculation classes have scheduled internal exams in April.

In October last year, it was reported that the start of the new academic session at colleges across Sindh was delayed owing to certain decisions made by Minister of Universities and Boards Ismail Rahu.

It was per his directives that Secretary Universities and Boards Mansoor Abbas was made to give the temporary charge of Larkana Board of Education in Karachi, to a Deputy Controller of grade-18.

The new appointee however, had failed to release results of science and arts group timely, causing matriculation scores to be delayed by 18 days compared to last year and two-and-a-half months per the decision of this year’s steering committee.

Owing to which, colleges in the province had been unable to schedule their first-year intermediate intakes, putting the entire academic calendar in jeopardy.
