Sindh ready to help develop Balochistan agriculture

Economists and experts stress need of exploring available benefits

HYDERABAD:

Agriculturists from Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) are ready to help Balochistan meet challenges of agricultural challenges, said SAU Tandojam Dr Fateh Marri.

He said expertise is utilising available facilities to take advantage of resources in Balochistan for agricultural development.

Marri was speaking at a seminar on Contours of Economic Growth and Sustainable Development in Balochistan on Friday.

The importance of orchards and organic cotton are increasing in Blaochistan, Marri said.

He emphasised on planning to meet the challenges of food security, effective utilization of agricultural waste and promotion of agriculture and industrial services, and manufacturing.

Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITMS) Quetta Professor of Economics Dr Abdul Salam Lodhi said that Balochistan was the largest province of the country, covering 44 per cent of the total land area and 75 per cent of the coastline.

He said the province needs investment, business management and human resource development in minerals, fisheries, livestock and agriculture to tackle issues of unemployment, poverty and food insecurity through sustainable development.

SAU Faculty of Agricultural Social Sciences Dean Dr Aijaz Ali Khonharo said there is scope for new agricultural research in Balochistan. Agriculture can play key role in economic development of the country, he added.

Prof Ismail Kumbhar said that joint projects in higher education and research institutes of Balochistan and Sindh can support the agricultural development of the country.

Dr Ghulam Mujtaba Khushk, Dr Barkatullah Qureshi, Dr Habib Magsi also attended the seminar with large number of teachers and students.
