Giraffe dies at Lahore Zoo after 'blood infection'

A male giraffe aged 10 died at the Lahore Zoo in the early hours of Friday, reportedly due to “blood infection”, confirmed zoo director Muddasir Hasan.

The giraffe was "under treatment for blood-related illness", as per the director. He added that the cause of death could be confirmed after the autopsy of the wild animal that will be released in the next two days. However, the body of the animal has been buried.

There was only one pair of giraffes in the zoo and after the death of the animal that was aged 10 years, only a female giraffe has been left.

Along with two female companions, this giraffe was procured by the Lahore zoo in 2018, but one of the female giraffes died soon after her arrival.

Consequently, the contractor procured another giraffe as a replacement but she too died during the quarantine period.

As both deaths had occurred during the quarantine period, the dealer was bound to provide another animal to the zoo, but he has not made any deliveries so far.
