The single day death toll from novel coronavirus infection jumped to 42 during the past 24 hours, the highest level since 46 fatalities registered on October 6 last year, the daily update of the pandemic released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) said on Thursday.
The NCOC, which serves as the nerve centre of the government’s unified effort to stem the spread of Covid-19, said that the single day tally of fresh cases declined to 5,830 from 6,047 cases a day ago. The national positivity ratio, it added, was 9.8%.

The highest number of new cases, 1,589, was recorded in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, followed by 1,463 cases in Punjab and 1,419 in Sindh. However, the highest number of deaths, 16, occurred in Punjab, followed by 14 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and 9 in Sindh.
According to the NCOC, the recoveries outnumbered the tally of new cases, as 7,800 people recovered from coronavirus infection during the past 24 hours, reducing the number of active cases to 100,072, including 1,590 patients in critical condition
