KARACHI:

Tall claims of police top brass on controlling street crimes seem to have fallen flat on the ground with rampant increase in the incidents of snatching at gunpoint across the city.

The robbers are roaming freely, even in the upscale locality of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) where two incidents of mugging at doorstep have taken the net by storm.

Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of a robbery in DHA Phase II Extension near Baitus Salaam Mosque clearly shows armed suspects ambushing a family in front of their home. As per the footage, as soon as the woman steps out of her car, two armed suspects on two motorbikes, who were apparently following them, come close and pull out pistols. One of the armed suspects snatches gold bangles from the victim and the duo speeds away.

The suspects used helmets to conceal their identities. The armed suspects fled away with gold jewellery, mobile phones and cash. The incident took place at around 5.30pm on January 31.

Similarly, In the DHA Phase 7 area robbers snatched cash from a citizen on his doorstep. Footage of the incident went viral on social media, showing that a man parked a white car in front of the house.

He was getting out of the car to reach the main gate when three robbers riding two motorcycles, wearing pant shirts, two of whom were wearing helmets, and one was wearing a cap and a mask, held him hostage at gunpoint.

The robbers knew that the suspect had cash hidden in socks took it out and fled unchallenged. When contacted, SHO Gizri Sajjad Khan said that the dacoits looted Rs.250,000 in cash from the citizen who had just drawn it from a bank. Social media was flooding with posts that it was an inside job and robbers had tailed the victim from the bank.
