First teaser of pulp-thriller ‘Chakkar’ offers all the drama but no plot

Starring Ahsan Khan and Neelam Munir, the film is set to release on Eid

The first teaser for Chakkar, a murder-mystery produced by Nida Yasir and Yasir Nawaz and starring Ahsan Khan and Neelam Munir, is out and it offers a little too much of, well, absolutely nothing.

The teaser opens with a shot of a scared-looking Neelam in an ominous seeming corridor, only to have her dragged away by someone dinning black leather gloves, as most killers do.

It then moves to shots of Neelam fluffing up her blow-dried hair in front of a mirror, followed by a shot of her driving a car late at night in the rain, only to be stopped by two unknown assailants on a motorbike, wielding rifles. If it wasn’t obvious enough thanks to the barrage of pulpy imagery, this film is, as the trailer clearly states, “A thriller”. The plot? Well, your guess is as good as ours.

Neelam’s shots are followed by a dapper Ahsan walking up a staircase looking very serious, which then cuts to Yasir in an alley, looking like he’s posing for an Instagram shoot.

What comes next is a vertigo-inducing flurry of so many scenes that stay on the screen for a maximum of half a second. The one’s we caught by pausing the screen every now and again before giving up were of Neelam prepping for her inevitable dance number is a sparkly golden dress and a shot of liquor bottles and an intoxicated female.

Yasir walks into view from behind a police mobile, Ahsan dramatically takes off his sunglasses, a man in a black hoodie forces Neelam’s head into a sink full of water and Javed Sheikh can be seen being, well, Javed Sheikh. There is also a lot of broken glass and a high blood-pressure inducing score being played in the background.

There are also scenes from what seems to be a forensic investigation, gathering evidence from a crime scene and filling test tubes with blood. A fist fight also ensues between Ahsan and Yasir. The trailer boldly asserts that the film will be something we’ve “never seen before”, but the staple thriller scenes have us thinking otherwise. However, here’s hoping we are proved wrong, and the badly edited teaser is hiding a pulp thriller worth watching.

The trailer ends with a man standing over a grave laid with fresh rose petals, so someone will probably die. We hope it isn’t our (very limited) expectations! Directed by Yasir, Chakkar will hit cinemas this Eidul Fitr. The official poster of the film shows Neelam in a black dress, clutching a rose in her hand while lying on a stretcher, with the male cast, surrounding her in white lab coats.
