Twitter finds PSL's inaugural video ‘inspired’ by Olympics 2012

Fans found the two videos to be eerily similar and we don’t completely disagree

It’s cricket season all over again with Pakistan Super League 2022! Boosting the morales of players before matches began, former cricket player and Prime Minister, Imran Khan had an inaugural message. The rather dramatic video, featuring Khan and Ramiz Raja was full of cricket frenzy, upbeat music, and royal charm.

Uploaded on Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf’s (PTI) social media accounts on Tuesday, Pakistani Twitter couldn’t help but create comparisons of how the promotional video is eerily similar to the inaugural video of the London Olympics’ 2012 video featuring Queen Elizabeth and Hollywood star, Daniel Craig aka James Bond.

Whether an inspiration or not, the video was initially lauded by cricket fans, but netizens had mixed reactions about the plagiarism attempt once it became news. They were mostly upset about the marketing stunt “lacking originality.” A user called Imran Khan a “desi Queen Elizabeth”

A user tweeted, “If the maker of this PSL video wanted to create a burlesque of Olympics inauguration video starring Queen and Daniel Craig, he really did hit the mark! But if he was serious, it's absolutely tactless and boring, to begin with.”

On a scale of 1-100, a user believed the video was “90%” plagiarised. Can that be a coincidence?

Another user was particularly upset with the lack of efforts of PSL celebrations this year around but called the video "the only good thing" to happen.

They took to the micro-blogging app and shared, "PSL season 7 and there is no branding on streets during matches, in previous PSL seasons at least Karachi was decorated. Even areas around the stadium were in blackout today. What a mess! The only good thing this chairman PCB did was copy James Bond Olympics ad with the Queen."
