The single day tally of fresh Covid cases topped 7,000 level for second straight day, as the fifth wave of coronavirus pandemic continued unabated on the back of Omicron variant, according to the data issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Monday.
The NCOC, which serves as the nerve centre of the government’s unified effort against the global pandemic, said 7,195 more people tested positive for Covid-19 during the last 24 hours, while eight people breathed their last.

The national positivity rate was 12.5%, the NCOC said. The latest figures raised the national caseload of the disease to 1,374,800 while the nationwide death toll rose to 29,105. The highest number of new cases, 3,125, was reported from Sindh, followed by 2,108 from Punjab, according to the data.
The forum said that 833 people recovered from the coronavirus, taking the country's total to 1,269,078. According to the data, the number of active cases was 76,617, while the number of Covid-19 patients in critical care stood at 1,113.
The NCOC had announced several measures to contain the spread of the infectious disease. These include new standard operating procedures for educational institutions and places of worship. The authorities had also intensified the national vaccination campaign, particularly in schools.
