CPPC seeks Rs3.12 power tariff hike

The Central Power Purchase Company (CPPC) has moved the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) for a Rs3.12 increase in the power tariff on account of monthly fuel adjustment for the month of December.

At the same time, the Karachi Electric (K-E) has moved a separate application with Nepra for reducing the power tariff by Rs1.79. The national regulator will take up the applications separately on February 1 and February 2.

The power tariff hike request by the CPPC would impose an additional burden to Rs30 billion on the electricity consumers, while the K-E request, if allowed, would provide a relief of Rs 2.10 billion to the consumers in the metropolitan.

The CPPC has requested the increase on account of the monthly fuel adjustment for December. Its petition stated that a total of 8.52 billion units of electricity were generated in the last month and the cost of power generation was Rs73.84 billion.

In December, according to data, 4% electricity was generated through the expensive furnace oil, 2.84% from diesel, 13.77% from local gas, while 13.50% from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). It added that LNG-based power cost Rs 17.8 per unit, diesel cost Rs14.8 per unit and coal cost Rs13. 31.
