In his television debut, Ishq-e-Laa, Azaan Sami Khan played Azlan, who gets married to Shanaya Ahmed, played by Sajal Aly. The latest episode of the show saw his wife’s tragic demise, and to honour the beautifully written character, the Ik Lamha crooner paid tribute to it on his Instagram.

The serial saw Shanaya, a journalist, treading risky territories to bring justice to those wronged by the corrupt system before getting killed in the process. Relating her struggles to real-life, Khan shared a picture of her funeral bed and wrote, “In a world rampant with violence against women and a justice system that is crippled to favour the powerful, Shanaya Ahmed was a figure that represented the countless lives that we as a nation and world have lost to injustice.”

He shared how “proud” he felt to have played a husband to such a strong woman. And remembering all the unsung female heroes failed by our nation, he added, “She was a figure like many who have unfortunately passed away, those who idealistically believed their voice could dutifully fight for the right cause and would be heard. But as reality has shown us time and again, such voices are silenced and put away. The bureaucracy and plagued legal systems of today slowly frustrate those fighting for causes and eventually, they fade into nothingness till another such tragedy happens.”

He went on to compliment Aly for her performance and thanked her for being a “great support”. To conclude, Azaan hoped that the serial becomes a “drop in the ocean towards a change that is required for anyone who comes forth to have their voices heard.”

Azaan also thanked Momina Duraid and Qaisera Hayat for bringing the bold character on screen and the director, Amin Iqbal, for its painful but truthful execution. Lastly, he thanked his fans for their unconditional support.
