The role of retail sector is important for local sourcing of fresh produce for modernisation of agricultural sector and it can benefit Pakistan’s economy in multiple ways, said Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam.
At the inauguration ceremony of Carrefour’s hypermarket on Monday, he said that creation of direct connection between supermarkets and farms was effectively catering to domestic demand of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Speaking on the occasion, Carrefour Country Manager Umer Lodhi stated that the enterprise was committed to providing support to local economy through expansion plans.
“We are also playing our part in the economic revival of the country alongside the government of Pakistan by achieving shared objectives, including sustainable community development,” he further added.
The mart is expected to provide economic support to 170 households in the city through job creation and local sourcing of products.
With the initiative, the company has further poured Rs1 billion in addition to its current investment of Rs9.5 billion in the country. He expressed confidence in Pakistan’s retail sector and underlined the company’s desire to support the growth and prosperity of the communities.
Majid Al Futtaim Chief Financial Officer Thierry Joulin was also present in the ceremony.
