Met office dispels concerns of heavy rains in Karachi

Says new western rain system to enter country via Balochistan today

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Friday that heavy rains were not expected in Karachi in the upcoming days however, adding that light drizzle was expected in the city from January 5 to 6.

According to the Met Department, the new western rain system was expected to enter the country through Balochistan today.

The minimum temperature in the metropolis was recorded at 13 degrees Celsius last night.

On December 27, the first spell of winter rains intensified the cold weather in Karachi.

Heavy and light rains were recorded early in the morning in different areas of the city, including in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Malir, Model Colony, Kharadar, Garden and Qayyumabad.

The PMD stated that the highest rainfall (5mm) was recorded in Quaidabad, whereas 4mm was recorded at the airport and (3mm) in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

The Met department had maintained that the city was going to be in the grips of a cold wave from December 28 that is expected to last till January 5.

Earlier, the PMD stated that most areas of the country will experience a rainspell and snowfall likely from December 25, under the effect of a "strong westerly weather system".
