Sindh Bar Council Office Secretary Irfan Ali Mahar was allegedly killed on the instigation of his wife, Karachi’s acting police chief and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officials revealed at a press conference on Sunday.
Irfan Mahar was shot dead by unidentified assailants when he was returning home after dropping his child to school in Karachi's Gulistan-e-Jauhar on December 2.
Acting Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon told the media that Ghulam Akbar and Wajid Jakhro were among the arrested suspects. Accused Akbar is brother-in-law of the victim.
Memon said that as per investigation Mahar’s wife, irked with property disputes and daily quarrels, planned to kill her husband with the help of her sister and brother.

Memon’s wife had persuaded her brother Akbar to assassinate her husband and gave him Rs220,000 on different occasions. The accused then persuaded his friend Jakhro to help him kill his brother-in-law.
The two suspects bought 125cc motorcycles, weapons, helmets and jackets as planned. They stayed at a hotel near Cantt Station a day before the incident.
On the morning of December 1, 2021, when Mahar went to drop off his youngest son at school, they shot him dead by indiscriminate firing and fled the scene.
Memon further said that information regarding Mahar leaving his house to drop off his child was given by his wife to her brother on his mobile phone. The suspects chased him and killed him at the earliest opportunity.

After the incident, the brother-in-law of the victim came to the police station and raise commotion. Suspicion was raised but the suspects had fled Karachi and went hiding in the interior Sindh, however, as soon as they get back to Karachi on Saturday night, the Karachi police and CTD took timely action and arrested both the suspects.
The acting police chief said that Jakhro was riding the motorcycle while Mahar's brother-in-law got off from the motorcycle and opened fire. Both the suspects have no affiliation with any political organisation.
Representatives of the Sindh Bar Council who participated in the press conference expressed satisfaction over the police investigation.
Responding to media queries, the acting police chief said that Sindh IGP had sent a proposal to the law department for geo-fencing of habitual offenders and wearing electronic bands on them. "Legislation on this will significantly help in controlling street crimes in Karachi."
