RAWALPINDI:

Work on the Sihala overhead bridge was formally started after 30 years following a protest by citizens and lawyers.

The project will cost a total of Rs500 million. The total length of the overhead bridge is one kilometre.

Due to the closure of the railway gate owing to VVIP movement, traffic remains jammed for hours at the location. Citizens and motorists have to wait for hours at the Sihala railway gates for hours. It is the busiest intersection of the twin cities.

Sihala Police Training College is also located a few meters away from the railway gate. The same intersection is also used to access the crucially defensive Kahuta and the under-constructed Krut Dam and powerhouse.

This road is narrow and broken and will be widened.

Citizens, traders and shopkeepers of Sihala have been demanding to construct an underpass and a flyover. The project will be completed in one year.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf constituency MNA and provincial party president Sadaqat Ali Abbasi told The Express Tribune that funds for the project had been released and the contractor has started work.
