‘Sugar crisis over in Rawalpindi’

75 shops sealed during crackdown against hoarders in last two days

RAWALPINDI:

The sugar crisis in Rawalpindi has ended after some 25,000 bags of imported sugar were supplied in the market.

The supply of locally produced sugar has not resumed so far, but is expected in the next five days.

Karyana Merchant Association President Pervaiz Butt said the supply of sugar via government stalls is over and imported sugar is being sold in wholesale markets to consumers and retailers.

He said that people should complain about the grocery stores not selling sugar in their areas.

The district administration officials said the commodity is now available at the rate of Rs90 per kg at every grocery store.

District Commissioner Muhammad Ali was informed that some 75 shops hoarding the commodity were sealed during the last two days and heavy fines were imposed, while any hoarders still found illegally stockpiling sugar would end up in Adiala Jail.

Confectioneries across the Rawalpindi district have also resumed making and selling sweet edibles.
