Information and Broadcasting Minister Farrukh Habib said on Saturday that the government has taken substantial steps to facilitate low-income groups and destitute people as Rs120 billion have been allocated to issue Ehsas Ration Cards to 12 million deserving families.
He stated that loans amounting to Rs450 billion were provided to industrialists and businessmen through banks for the installation of modern machinery to help increase national exports by reducing the cost of production.
"Now for the first time, small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) are being provided collateral-free loans up to Rs10 million", he added.
Habib maintained that the Ehsaas programme is considered the fourth-best programme among 3,400 welfare programmes of the world.
He said that the government was providing loans to homeless people so that they could build their own houses and 57,000 applications had been received so far.
"Loans worth Rs80 billion have been approved for 23,000 applicants out of which, Rs19 billion has so far been disbursed," he added.
