Deep-water terminal to start service in Nov

Infrastructure installed for connecting terminal with main railway line

KARACHI:

The deep-water terminal of Hutchison Ports Pakistan is set to start logistics service next month as the installation of systems and infrastructure to connect the terminal with the main line of Pakistan Railways has been completed, said Hutchison Ports Pakistan General Manager and Head of Business Unit Rashid Jamil.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the general manager revealed that the construction of 3.7 km of modern track and installation of a computer-based interlocking system had been completed inside the terminal.

“Hutchison Ports Pakistan is fully equipped to provide end-to-end cargo service with state-of-the-art railway infrastructure,” he said.

The railway infrastructure to be built at the terminal consists of a single line, which is further divided into three tracks on which cargo trains can be operated simultaneously.

Moreover, it has an additional railway line where an engine or a bogie can have a long stay for maintenance purposes.

According to Jamil, cargo trains will provide end-to-end service to importers and exporters for which discussions have been started with customers and booking of cargo delivery by rail will start as soon as the opening date is fixed.

He said that all matters including booking for cargo delivery would be handled by the terminal administration through one-window operation.

Federal Secretary Railways and Pakistan Railways Chairman Habibur Rehman Gilani has indicated that the facility would be inaugurated in one and a half month and has set the target of running 10 cargo trains per day, he added.
