An abusive marriage

June 23, 2010

LONDON: This is with reference to Rubina Saigol’s article “An abusive marriage” (June 23). I don’t blame Maulana Sherani because he represents the segment of our society which believes that if a woman is dressed “modestly,” by donning a hijab, she will not be harassed.

However, I blame the coalition government because the allegedly secular left-wing parties have appointed people like Maulana Sherani. Our elected leaders give precedence to dishing out favours for their personal or political benefit over the lives and rights of women.

I agree with Ms Saigol – we need to do away with the Council of Islamic Ideology altogether because in its present form they are tools for control over the people.

It is just like saying, if men are barred from leaving their home, they will not do any crime or harass women. Women should have the right to decide what they want to wear and how freely they want to move around. If a man harasses her, he should be educated to treat her like a human being and not as a sex object.
