Transgender community not happy with police behaviour

Police training module should include chapters on laws enacted to protect rights of trans-persons, says GIA

Karachi Police Chief Imran Yaqub Minhas on Sunday said that protection of life, property and self-esteem of all sections of the society especially the persons who are transgender is among the responsibilities of the police department.

The Karachi police chief expressed these views during a meeting with a delegation of Gender Interactive Alliance (Gia).

Gia President Bindia Rana, Adviser Shirin and other members of the delegation briefed the police chief about the problems of the transgender community.

Gia informed the Karachi Additional IG about the behaviour of the policemen towards the vulnerable community. The delegation thanked the Karachi police chief for improving the situation in police stations and other legal matters as compared to the past.

The delegation said that police training module should include chapters on laws enacted to protect the rights of trans-persons.

The Karachi police chief assured the delegation that the complaints of the transgender community regarding the police would be resolved soon.

"Transpersons, like other Pakistanis, are an important part of the nation and their protection is our responsibility," he said. "Karachi Police, with limited resources, is playing a role in securing the lives and property of the weaker sections of society, women, children and transpersons," he added.
