Businessmen stress need for public-private tie-up

LAHORE:

Economic policies cannot yield desired results without due participation of the private sector, said Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Mian Nauman Kabir.

Talking to a delegation of the All Pakistan Paper Merchants Association (APPMA) on Saturday, Kabir said that the partnership between the government and business community would make the economy stronger.

Thus, the government should consider suggestions of the private sector while devising trade and economic policies, he added.

“Public and private sectors are vital for each other and cannot run alone. The government must develop policies for a conducive business environment and address genuine issues of the business community,” he stressed, adding that the business community was playing its part in the economic wellbeing of the country.

On the occasion, LCCI Vice President Haris Ateeq underlined the urgent need for reforms in the taxation system by engaging all stakeholders.

He urged the government to eradicate the double taxation system, which was hampering trade and economic activities.

“LCCI aims to promote trade and investment by implementing policies of the government and securing a business-friendly environment,” the LCCI office-bearers said.

They were of the view that the government should allocate a sufficient part of development funds for the markets of Lahore.

“The primary objective of LCCI is to protect the interest of business community, while remaining committed to the country’s development,” they pointed out, adding that there were a number of issues that must be resolved on priority.

They said that the government should help the business community to cope with those challenges as it would accelerate trade and economic activities as well as enhance trust between the government and private sector.

The delegation told chamber officials that thousands of traders in Urdu and Anarkali Bazaars were facing difficulties due to damaged roads and sewerage systems, which needed to be repaired immediately.
