One in every five Pakistanis dies of heart disease, say experts

Leading cardiologists have stressed that every fifth death in Pakistan is due to heart disease.

Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy revealed that the death rate from heart disease in Pakistan is 20 per cent. He was addressing an awareness seminar on the occasion of World Heart Disease Day at the lecture hall of DUHS.

Apart from him, DUHS Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Zarnaz Wahid, Professor Nusrat Shah, Dr Akhtar Ali Baloch, Dr Zahid Azam, Head of Dow Institute of Cardiology Dr Tariq Farman and others also addressed the gathering.

Earlier, an awareness walk was organised from Dr Ishratul Ebad OT Complex to Main OPD. Quraishy said that by focusing on diet and exercise, "we can stay safe from heart diseases."

He said that by quitting smoking and by increasing exercise duration, one can increase life expectancy.

Earlier in his inaugural address, Dr Tariq Farman said that 17 million people in the world die of heart disease every year and this number reaches 250,000.

In Pakistan every year, arterial blockage is a very important cause. The same thing is being emphasised all over the world. Precaution is better than treatment," he said.
