CINCINNATI:

Juan Martin del Potro won his opening round match at the ATP Cincinnati Masters, setting up a second-round rematch of his 2009 US Open final against Roger Federer.

Del Potro, who is ranked 19th in the world, was 4-1 ahead against Andreas Seppi when the Italian withdrew because of an injured right foot.

“I felt confident in my forehand,” said del Potro. “I set up my winners well. I thought my serve was good. We only played five games but I felt like I hit pretty well.”

Del Potro upset Federer in the US Open final two years ago and the duo has met eight times with del Potro winning the last two after Federer beat him six straight times.

“If I have a good day, maybe I can make a surprise. Not many players can beat Federer. I’ve already beaten him twice, so I know how to play him. But it’s Roger. He’s the favourite.”
