Double standards: Sonya Hussyn disappointed at being snubbed by the LSAs once again

The star called out the organisers and jury of the LSA for choosing TRPs over quality content

The 20th Lux Style Awards nominations were recently announced. While there was no Film category this year due to no releases last year attributing to the ongoing pandemic, the nominations for fashion, music and television were unveiled. There were few prominent snubs in the nominations and actor Sonya Hussyn is done being silent about it.

The Saraab star took to social media and called out the organisers and jury of the LSA for choosing drama serials with more TRPs being nominated over quality content.

The Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida penned, "It is very disappointing to see that a project like Saraab did not bag even a single nomination at the Lux Style Awards 2021." She added, "We talk about the need for meaningful content that also educates the masses with real issues but when [such content is] finally created they're hardly ever recognised/nominated for awards. Aren't those double standards?"

Sonya further added, "Meaningful content or hit projects? [I] have never really understood the criteria for these award shows. If [it's the] latter then why were some of my mega-blockbuster dramas like Aisi Hai Tanhai (based on social media abuse), Nazo (based on child abuse), Ishq Zahe Naseeb (based on dual personality disorder), Shikwa (based on societal pressures that widows face) and Meri Guriya (based on child abuse) never considered at all in the past?"

Lastly, the Meri Guriya actor wrote, "I've been silent for seven years but really, were none of these [dramas] deserving? Not even a single project? Anyhow, in a country where veteran artists are given lifetime achievement awards after they're gone, then who am I to question?"

Previously, the actor had shared about how the artists have certain responsibilities to address the social taboos. "Being an artist, we have a responsibility to address matters that masses usually shy away from. Our society suffers from a grave issue: we like to complicate things. Take any topic if you like, let it be women's rights, complexion, their physique - all such matters have been complicated because we don't discuss such things."

Apart from Sonya, singer-turned-actor Hadiqa Kiyani also took to social media and addressed why her debut drama Raqeeb Se hasn't received a nomination. "I’ve gotten so many messages of love/support for Sakina/Raqeeb Se today but something that needs to be clarified," she tweeted, adding, "Raqeeb Se did not qualify for this year's Lux Style Awards but it may qualify for next year based off of the LSA year policy. So until then, let’s hold our pitchforks."

On the other hand, rockstar Meesha Shafi expressed her gratitude for being nominated for Best Singer. "Just got an LSA nomination for ‘Singer of the Year’ for ‘Sakal Ban, which has also been nominated for ‘Best Music Video’," the Aaya Lariye singer shared. "A proud moment since it was my first time producing a music video, Thank you to the LSA music jury."

The Awards Office of the LSAs announced nominations for 22 leading categories across critics and viewer’s choice awards, celebrating talents across genres and setting trends with performances from renowned stars.
