Cyclists from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) clinched the top three positions and the trophy of the All-Pakistan Azadi Cup Mountain Bike Cycle Race on Sunday.
A 35-kilometre race from Abbottabad to Nathiagali was organised by the Pakistan Cycling Federation with the collaboration of the K-P Cycling Association, Directorate of Sports KP, the district administration and regional sports office Abbottabad.
The K-P cyclists took a complete lead over their rivals and cliched the first three positions as 33 cyclists from all over the country took part in the race despite heavy rain.
The first three positions went to Yousaf Khan who won the top slot by covering 35 kilometres in 1 hour and 34 minutes and Sajid covered the distance in 1 hour and 37 minutes and 34 seconds and took the runnerup trophy while Omar Farooq covered the distance in 1 hour and 37 minutes and 44 seconds.
Provincial Culture Minister Shaukat Yousafzai distributed cash and other prizes among the athletes. He said that the provincial government was taking special steps for the promotion of sports.
He added that the provincial government has taken vital steps to tap the tourism potential and holding such events would also help in attaining and achieving the real goal of bringing local and foreign tourists to scenic places.
The minister further said the exploration of tourism potential would help in creating employment opportunities for the locals.
