The IPCC issues a harrowing report which concludes that global heating is now irreversible

August 16, 2021

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has issued a harrowing report which concludes that global heating is now irreversible. Therefore, it is unequivocal that climate disruption will now continue for decades if not centuries since greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere have long crossed their critical threshold. Almost a week before this study was published, climate scientists detected warning signs of the collapse of the Gulf Stream — one of the planet’s main potential tipping points. They claim that there has been “an almost complete loss of stability over the last century” of ocean currents in the region. Unfortunately, we only have ourselves to blame.

There is now immense scientific data backed by irrefutable physical evidence that can be highlighted in excruciating detail in order to prove that this ecological crisis is an extinction level event. What is therefore direly needed is immediate, rapid and large-scale action to significantly reduce the global emission rate and the carbon footprint of countries. While the primary onus lies most on the US and China, the crisis has become a global responsibility. Regrettably, our leaders remain unaware and ill-informed of the severity of the situation. The report indirectly indicates that planting a billion trees, building dams and introducing electric vehicles is of no use unless global concerted actions are taken. The agenda must be rigorously pushed at all international forums.

Pakistan, being a front-runner in the fight against climate change, must spearhead the cause by diplomatically gaining the support of other nations. Then, pressure can be imposed on countries that have the highest carbon footprint. They must be subjected to and implement the UN Framework Conventions on Climate Change, particularly the Paris Agreement. Those who fail to do so must be held accountable. Furthermore, the UN must also restructure their treaties in accordance with updated scientific information and formulate sterner policies along with deadlines. It is said that we humans only change at the precipice of something. Well, we are at one now.
