Patriarchy has no gender: Nadia Jamil

Jamil elucidates how masculinity becomes toxic because of patriarchy but it does not need to be that way.

Veteran actor Nadia Jamil, who has been vocal about the raging sexual violence against women and children lately, has taken to her social media to provide a lowdown about why she thinks patriarchy has no gender.

Jamil has quoted the likes of late American poet Adrienne Rich, neuroscientists and advocate of global harmony and peace Abhijit Naskar, Saudi women's rights activist Manal al-Sharif and late philosopher, Sufi poet Bulleh Shah to substantiate her views.

Taking to her Instagram, Jamil shared, “Patriarchy has no gender: ‘There is nothing revolutionary about the control of women's bodies by men. The woman's body is a terrain on which patriarchy is erected,’ Rich. ‘We don't need a patriarchal society, we don’t need a matriarchal society; we just need a human society,’ Naskar. ‘How beautiful it is to live in a world with no walls,’ Al-Sharif. ‘Larna ay roz shaitaan de naal, Te kadi nafs apnay naal larya ee na (You fight Satan every day but you never fight your own ego),’ Shah.”

Previously, Jamil took to Twitter to elucidate how patriarchy may be the reason why masculinity has become toxic but when boys are conditioned to believe masculinity is associated with positive attributes, things can change. “Masculinity does not need to be toxic. It can be strong, gentle, loving and nurturing. Our boys are taught vulnerability and emotions are a sign of weakness, when they are actually a beautiful sign of being human. All genders need to respect each other and other life forms, animals, trees, oceans.”

Prior to this, during the time celebrities were speaking up against the brutal murder of Noor Mukadam and the release of Khadija Siddiqui’s attempted murderer, Jamil had tweeted “And countless more women suffer brutal attacks stemming from a toxic patriarchy. When these attacks go unpunished the sociopaths committing them and their counterparts are encouraged to continue. Let’s end this cycle by punishing these beasts fast and firmly.”

Here's hoping more people can understand the root cause of the issue so we can tackle it as a society instead of blindly, arguing amongst each other.
